Kaver’s Lament

I first published this on my web site in 2005, but — as Kaver says — it happens every year.

Kaver’s Lament

Kaver's Lament

Every year, it’s the same story.

Knee-deep in gravel

I dig a scrape big enough for four eggs.

Hip-deep...

“Deeper,” she says. “Dig deeper. I want room for more eggs.”

I say, “Mariah, I’m not BIG enough to brood more than four eggs!”

Does she listen?

Does she listen? No.

Kaver in the hole

She wants the hole big enough for FIVE eggs!

Foot

This year, I’m putting my foot down.

Big yellow feet

Four eggs, Mariah.

Did you hear me?

Did you hear me?

I said FOUR EGGS!
